  7.     The balance beam is a straight and narrow length of pure
  8. treachery. "I was really scared of doing anything at first,"
  9. says Kim Zmeskal. That was eight years ago. Now Zmeskal, 14,
  10. is the U.S. senior women's all-around gymnastics champ. The
  11. mighty mite from Houston -- she is 4 ft., 6 in. and weighs 70
  12. lbs. -- has been putting in six hours a day, six days a week
  13. to be ready for the Goodwill Games that begin in Seattle next
  14. week. And after that? Perhaps the Olympics in '92. Her coach
  15. would feel right at home. He's Bela Karolyi, who trained gold
  16. medalists Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton.
